Abstract

The writing of the al-Qur'an started from the period of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W itself. There are two methods in producing the writing, i.e. Rasm 'Uthmani or Rasm Imla'i. However, this article only emphasizes on Rasm 'Uthmani in term of its preference and uniqueness. Its preference are (i) Determined by Allah (tawfiqi) (ii) One of the basic foundations of Qur'anic recitation, (iii) Relevancy of sab'ah al-ahruf and match the final checking of the al-Qur'an. While its uniqueness are in term of its additional letters (ahruf al-ziyadah), substituted letters (ahruf al-ibdal), representative to the Arab slang (lahajat), omitted letters (hadhaf) and others. Therefore based on those aspects, Muslim scholars make it compulsory in writing the Qur'an and at the same time, the other method is abolished.
